Artist starts community project to draw attention to struggling businesses

APTOS, Calif. (KION) It's a typical walk around the neighborhood, until you come by Amy Steinberg's house.

"One family calls it the eye spy house. Someone will come up and say, 'Mom, what's that?,'" said Steinberg.

People have been stuck inside for months, but in Aptos, Amy Steinberg has given them a reason to come outside.

"I can bring something to the neighborhood. Hopefully it brings some joy and some laughs," said Steinberg.

Steinberg is using down time during the coronavirus to explore her creativity. Her driveway is her canvas.

Paintings, props and pottery are drawing attention to businesses that have suffered since March. This week, the Monterey Bay Aquarium took center stage.

"I've worked on this for 12 plus days. It's been a labor of love," said Steinberg.

Neighbors said Steinberg's driveway has become somewhat of a community project. People have dropped off props and their own art to add to what Steinberg has built.

"I thought it was really nice and a great way to show happiness," said neighbor, Cole Macon.

Steinberg is encouraging the neighborhood to donate to businesses displayed through work. She hopes that together they can help make a difference.

"The art installation brings a lot of hope. There is still a lot of living to be done. I believe the community is really embracing that message," said neighbor, Wendy Cohen.
