Students gather data, clean up Cowell Beach
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) A group of fifth graders at Mount Madonna School were out at Cowell Beach today to learn more about the environment, and clean up the beach in the process.
The students are studying great white sharks this year, and the school included a community service component.
“The fifth grade is participating in this beach clean-up to positively impact the survival of great white sharks and other species through improvements to this important habit abutting the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary” said project mentor and fifth grade teacher Jessica Cambell.
Campbell said choosing a science-related topic and studying it in-depth is an essential part of the curriculum, but it is also a way to get the students involved with issues that matter to them in the community.
