CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 9/14/2020 2 p.m. A kitten found injured in a burned van has been returned to its family, according to SPCA Monterey County.

The kitten, Bubs, and an adult cat, Mango, were found in a burned van in the Carmel Fire evacuation area. Mango was not injured, but Bubs had serious burns on all four of his paws.

The SPCA found the cats' family using information from the burned van. The family had been forced to leave their home with no notice, and their home was lost. When they returned to the area, they found their third cat, Grizzly, who had minor injuries. The SPCA said he hid from their rescuers when the other two were found.

Because the family lost their home, Bubs was placed with a foster family during his treatment, which included daily bandage changes.

Now the SPCA says Bubs is healed, healthy and back with his family.

PREVIOUS STORY: SPCA Monterey County rescued a cat and a injured kitten from the area around the Carmel Fire Tuesday.

The agency said a rescue team was called to the area around Via Cielo off Cachagua Road when a firefighter said he had seen cats in a burned van. The team found the cats and took them back to the shelter for care.

They said the kitten, named Bubs, had severe burns on all four paws, but is expected to make a full recovery. The SPCA said he is getting pain medication, antibodies and care for the injuries.

The older cat, Mango, was covered in soot, but was not injured.

The SPCA found the owners of the cats, who were glad to hear they survived. Both are still being cared for at the SPCA.
