SAN ARDO, Calif. - The SPCA for Monterey County announced Friday it has found several dead cattle and a dead horse in San Ardo.
The discovery was made last week at a property on Pine Valley Road.
SPCA officials said they were able to rescue three horses and nine cattle that appeared to have been abandoned at the property.
According to the SPCA, two of the cattle were emaciated and all suffered from varying degrees of malnutrition. Two of the rescued horses were very thin and had sand in their stomachs. They also had lice infestations and fungal infections. One was suffering from an untreated leg wound. The third horse had to be humanely euthanized due to a painful, untreated broken hip.
The only water available at the scene was dirty and green with algae, and no food was available on the property, the SPCA said.
The rescued cattle are expected to be examined and vaccinated Friday afternoon.
If caught, the owners could face multiple charges, including animal cruelty.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the SPCA at 831-373-2631. If you would like to donate to help abused and neglected animals, call the SPCA at 831-264-5421 or visit www.SPCAmc.org.
