Salinas City Clerk Receives Petition To Recall Mayor Gunter

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. - Salinas City Clerk Patricia Barajas says she has received a petition from a group of residents who want to recall Mayor Joe Gunter.

These residents say they want the mayor out because he is calling for Salinas City Council member Jose Castañeda to step down from his position on the Alisal Union School Board due to a possible conflict of interest.

Barajas is now working to get a response to the group on whether they meet all the requirements in the Election Code to move forward and obtain signatures. In order to make it onto the ballot, 15 percent of the city's population would have to sign the petition.

The city clerk expects to have the response available next week.
