AROMAS, Calif. -- Hundreds of dollars worth of brass caps were stolen from fire hydrants in Monterey County.
"They protect the threads on the hydrant, so that if you go to thread your hose on the hydrant, they're not damaged," said Mark Treichel, fire captain for Cal Fire.
Five brass caps were stolen from fire hydrants along Carpenteria Road in Aromas last week.
The Aromas Water District was also robbed in February, costing a total of $585.
The caps are worth $120 a piece.
The water district is in the process of replacing all of the brass caps with plastic ones, in hopes that people won't steal them.
