MONTEREY, Calif. -- Nestled right on Alvarado Street between the Taco Bell and Cibo Italian Restaurant is a vacant space that the Monterey City Council is looking to change.

It was once the Hippodrome, a night club that had its license to serve alcohol revoked from the state. The city said there were issues with fights, underage drinking, and other serious concerns.

During a council meeting Tuesday night, the city moved forward with a proposal to transform the empty lot into a three-story apartment complex. The $3 million proposed project is set to have upgraded flooring, high ceilings and lots of natural lighting in each unit.

Other possible changes to Alvarado Street include outdoor seating, traffic directions, remodeling the two bus stations in the area and making Lighthouse Avenue more pedestrian friendly.
