Rep. Sam Farr Sends Letter To FAA In Hopes Of Keeping Salinas Airport Tower Open

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. - Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, has sent a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration in hopes of keeping the traffic control tower at the Salinas Municipal Airport open.

In the letter, Congressman Farr urges FAA Administrator Michael Huerta to look at aviation volume and economic factors when deciding which airport towers to close.

The towers at nearly 200 airports across the country are in danger of being closed because of federal spending cuts.

If the tower at the Salinas airport is shut down, Farr says, the cost of fresh produce and vegetables could go up because "crop dusters" and other aircrafts that provide pest-control services would need to be coordinated from a remote airport tower outside Monterey County.

The FAA is expected to announce its final list of tower closures on Friday.
