Spike in Car Thefts Could Impact Insurance Rates

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. -- This month alone in Salinas, at least one car was stolen everyday. Insurance agencies told Central Coast News, if this spike continues long term, you could end up paying more.

Neighborhood after neighborhood, the rise in auto theft numbers isn't slowing down in salinas.
"If the spike continues over a long period of time, then that could affect our rates in Monterey County," said Troy Anderson, insurance agent in Salinas.

Anderson said the trend would have to be consistent for it to start affecting rates. But the numbers so far show a trend. In February, the total was 126 stolen cars. So far in March, Salinas police say 72 cars have been stolen. The average is about 60 a month.

"If it looks like an easy target and you've allowed it to be an easy target then it will be an easy target," said Anderson.

Since there is a spike now, Anderson said this is the perfect time to make sure you don't become the next victim. parking your car inside a garage or well lit area could help. Installing an alarm system, keeping valuables out of sight and always remembering to lock you doors.

Still, Anderson said don't expect your rates to skyrocket next month.

"If we pay out a lot of claims for theft, in a certain area over a long period of time then they'll adjust those rates, if those trends continue," said Anderson.

There are many other variables that determine your insurance rate, like what kind of car and your driving record. Also, compared to bigger cities where there is more car theft, Central Coast cities pay a lot less.
