SALINAS, Calif.- A local cheer team, hit by thieves last year, proved they could overcome any obstacle and make it to the Cheerleading Worlds event for a second year.
In September, the Salinas-based cheer team Riptide All Stars said surveillance cameras caught a man in their gym stealing two speakers, two digital cameras, two laptops and 40 pairs of cheer shoes. They had spent four months raising money for their uniforms and in just one night their hard work was ruined.
But the team persevered by working hard to raise more money and less than a year later, they are making their way to Orlando, FL after placing second last weekend at the PacWest Cheerleading and Dance Championships in Portland, OR. They got a bid to the 2013 Cheerleading Worlds event at the end of April.
"Our season started in disarray with a robbery at the gym where thieves stole over $10,000 worth of equipment," said gym owner Sarah Diehl in a news release Tuesday, "But it's ending on a high note and we couldn't be prouder of all our athletes and entire Riptide family."
This year, Riptide has 10 competitive All Star teams and works with many local high schools, rec cheer programs and colleges as well, including CSUMB.
