SALINAS, Calif. -- The Federal Bureau of Investigation is stepping in to help local agencies in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties solve bank crimes.
The FBI doesn't get involved with all bank robbery investigations, only those banks that are federally insured.
Nationwide, it has responded to about 5,000 bank robberies a year since 2011.

In nationwide cases where money was taken, the suspects got away with around $38-45 million, with only about $8 million recovered each year.

Statewide, bank robberies decreased in California from 2009-2011.
