New Details Released In Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting In San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office has released new information about an officer-involved shooting in East San Jose that left a suspect dead.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. Monday in the area of White and Story roads.

According to a sheriff's office news release, members from the San Jose Police Department's METRO Unit were conducting a follow-up investigation on an unrelated case. They were driving unmarked city police vehicles and were in plain-clothes.

While conducting their investigation, officers noticed a suspicious Honda Civic, occupied by two adult males, drive through the area. Officers checked the Honda's license plate and found out that it was a stolen vehicle, the sheriff's office said.

METRO officers turned on their lights and siren to try to make an enforcement stop. The sheriff's office said the suspect slowed down and then proceeded to ram the Honda towards two of the occupied police vehicles and then crashed into a nearby unoccupied vehicle.

One of the officers got out of his vehicle and ordered the suspect out at gunpoint. The suspect ignored the officer's demands and allegedly accelerated the stolen vehicle towards the officer who was out on foot. Fearing for his life, the officer shot one round towards the suspect, the sheriff's office said.

Paramedics responded and transported the suspect, an adult male in his 20s, to an area hospital were he was later pronounced dead.

The passenger in the stolen vehicle, also an adult male in his 20s, was booked into the county jail for suspicion of violation of probation, possession of stolen property, and possession of burglary tools.

The sheriff's office says it will release the suspects' names and ages at a later time because this is an ongoing investigation.

The officer involved in the incident has been identified as METRO unit officer Bruce Barthelemy, a five-year veteran of the San Jose Police Department.
