MONTEREY, Calif. -- Another push to bring the downtown economy in Monterey back to life.
Talks are underway to transform what used to be a nightclub on Alvarado Street into an apartment complex.
The three-story building that used to be the nightclub Hippodrome could be turned into an upscale 22-unit apartment complex.
The $3 million proposed project will have upgraded flooring, high ceilings and lots of natural lighting in each unit.
It's welcome news to the Monterey Planning Commission after the old nightclub had its license to serve alcohol revoked from the state. The city said there were issues with fights, underage drinking, and other serious concerns.
The old Luxe Lounge on East Franklin also had similar issues. An American restaurant, called "Turn 12," could be taking over.
Other possible changes to Alvarado Street include outdoor seating, traffic directions, remodeling the two bus stations in the area and making Lighthouse Avenue more pedestrian friendly.
The Monterey City Council meets at 6 p.m. on Tuesday to vote on the apartment complex plan.
