Grenade Cleared From Kmart Lot In Watsonville

Posted: Updated:

WATSONVILLE, Calif. - A live grenade was removed from a U-Haul and taken to a landfill to be destroyed after a man surrendered it to police Thursday night.

Watsonville Police say they were on the scene of a stabbing in the parking lot of the K-Mart on Freedom Boulevard, after receiving reports of two men fighting. When officers arrived on scene, they we unable to locate anyone fighting. Witnesses said the men had left the area in separate vehicles.

A short time later, police say they were dispatched to the Watsonville Community Hospital for a stabbing victim. He was airlifted to a Bay Area trauma center as his wounds were life-threatening. The victim's condition has been upgraded, and his injuries are no longer life-threatening.

After the call at the hospital, Watsonville Police say they returned back to the parking lot on Freedom Boulevard and located a crime scene between some parked cars. The Watsonville Police CSI Unit was called out, and they gathered evidence at the scene.

While this was going on, a man driving a U-Haul truck saw police in the parking lot. According to police, the driver parked and walked over to an officer to report he had a live grenade that he wanted to turn in. Watsonville Police set a perimeter around the U-Haul as a precaution and evacuated the immediate area. The Santa Cruz County Bomb Squad was called out and eventually safely transported the grenade to the county landfill for a controlled detonation. Officers would later learn the man had found the grenade in a storage locker where he had placed items from deceased relatives. According to an officer, the man had no idea about the grenade until he opened an old box and saw it. He was going to the Sheriff's Service Center to turn it in when he saw Watsonville Police cars, and decided to hand it over to police instead.

The two events are not related.
