Changes to Safety in Central Coast School District, Students Agree

SALINAS, Calif. - Victor Flores and Bryan Rosales are both seniors at Salinas High School and can remember what it was like last year coming and going on their campus.

"That door over there, they do the ROP and late people go in through the attendance office and no one can go through the side doors," said Rosales.

Michael Romero, director of safety with the Salinas Union High School district, said safety has always been a priority for their schools.

"I do know that after the recent shootings have taken place, we have really taken a deep look at our safety precautions and what we are doing and what our needs are," explained Romero.

He said every school uses the student ID card but its the schools responsibility to make sure entrances and exits are safe.

"Some schools will actually require kids to show that ID card every time those kids step on campus, and others might have their students put them around their neck."

Romero said its their way of knowing who is on campus. At Salinas High, students and guests are forced to use two doors and go past a security checkpoint before entering the halls.

"Every school site has campus supervisors and we actually started using at the high schools with security guards that have special training."

Students like Victor and Bryan said they would trade the inconvenience for safety any day.
