UPDATE: As of 6:05 pm, the 8-year-old girl was found safe after not showing up at home after school Tuesday afternoon.

Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies say a miscommunication over an after school program was to blame.

Investigators say the girl's father called around 4:30p.m. to say she did not come home from Boronda Meadows Elementary. It was later determined the father was expecting to pick up the girl from an after school program, but it was cancelled.

The Sheriff's Office searched the areas around Kammann Elementary off Laurel Dr. to determine if the child got off at the wrong bus stop near her home.
