Black Smoke Seen at Vatican: No New Pope

Posted: Updated:

VATICAN CITY- Moments ago black smoke was seen from the Vatican signaling that the 115 Roman Catholic cardinals have not reached a decision on a new pope.

The smoke is created by the cardinals ballots being burned after the first vote.

Cardinals started deliberating inside the Vatican after swearing to an oath of secrecy and entering the papal conclave at about 5 p.m. Vatican City time, or 9 a.m. on the west coast.

The conclave will reconvene Wednesday morning.

The move follows the abdication of Pope Benedict XVI on Feb. 28.
