Monday marks the year anniversary of the devestating earthquake and tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 people.
Japan's Prime Minister says tsunami reconstruction is a "battle against time" and is vowing to speed up reconstruction of devastated areas. Thousands participated in a moment of silence on Monday to reflect on the tragedy.
The impact of the tsunami was felt here on the Central Coast as well. The Santa Cruz harbor was hit hard by the tsunami, causing $18 million in damage. It destroyed 23 of the 29 piers, only some of which have been repaired.
