Salinas, Calif.- 78 young authors from Monterey County Schools worked to perfect their skills on Monday during the Day of Writing event at the John Steinbeck Center. The event brings local professionals together with the young authors to help hone their craft along the lines of Steinbeck's classic "The Red Pony."
The Steinbeck Young Authors program was created to provide students with the opportunity to explore the excitement of writing while enhancing their writing skills. Their essays were meant to take the life lessons from Jody the 10 year old central character in The Red Pony written in 1933. These lessons then were incorporated into their own lives and put to paper. Mentors from the community worked to with the students to provide any counsel or direction needed.
The Steinbeck Young Authors program consists of three stages: a classroom component for all students, a Day of Writing event for teacher-nominated students, and an Awards Ceremony.
78 students were chosen by their teachers as an incentive or an award. The number is twice as many as last year, from Monterey County Schools. Later on, a panel of experts judges the students' final works.
This year's award ceremony will be at the National Steinbeck Center on Sunday, May 5, 2013; all of the students' essays are published in the Gabilan Journal.
