Pollution Markers For Storm Drains Distributed Throughout Monterey

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif. -- Several CSUMB students and community members gathered together on Saturday to put up markers over storm drains to remind people not to pollute.

They're working with the Save the Whales group and several other organizations to distribute the emblems. They're being placed above storm drains to educate the community about the importance of not dumping toxins or pollutants in drains that go out to the ocean.

Maris Sidenstecker is one of the coordinators in the efforts to pass out the pollution markers. She said the best way to make a difference in helping the environment is to have more and more people get involved. "Everyone do your part. We can all do better to help protect the ocean and our environment. It's the itty bitty things we do sometimes that make a big problem downstream." said Sidenstecker.

Volunteer workers said some of the most common toxins dumped into storm drains are motor oil, dog droppings and antifreeze.

The group goes out at least twice a month to put up new storm drain markers. Volunteers said they've already put out thousands of markers in cities along the Central Coast.
