Conclave to Decide Next Pope Set for March 12

Posted: Updated:

VATICAN CITY -- The cardinals selected to choose the next pope have decided the conclave will begin Tuesday, March 12.

Cardinals from around the world are meeting for a fifth day today and the 115 cardinals who will vote have been selected.

Once the election process, or conclave begins, the cardinals will take two votes in the morning and then two votes again in the afternoon.

All of the ballots will be cast in silence inside the Sistine Chapel.

The windows of the chapel have been covered so no one can see inside.

Two stoves have been installed. One will let out black smoke to show that voting is taking place but a new pope has not been selected.

Once a new pope is chosen by the conclave, white smoke will be sent from the Sistine Chapel.

This comes after Pope Benedict XVI resigned last week, the first Pope to resign since 1415.
