Winter Storm Hitting Central Coast

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif.- A winter storm is rolling through Tuesday night, although it's not expected to be major.

There were sunny skies Tuesday morning before the rain and wind hit the area. King City even came in with a high of 69 degrees Tuesday afternoon.

Central Coast News Chief meteorologist Norm Hoffmann said counties are still behind what they need for rainfall this year. Santa Cruz is 68 percent of normal, Monterey is 69 percent of normal and Salinas holds steady at 82 percent of normal. The lakes are only half full.

Locally gusty winds are expected with the weather front. Rain will change over to showers in the morning. Showers are expected to decrease Wednesday afternoon with partly cloudy skies. The upper low producing cold temperatures and showers will continue off the Northern California Coast for a few days. Rainfall totals could range from 0.25"-0.50" at the coast with 0.75" to 1.5" possible in the coastal mountains. Snow levels will drop to around 3000 feet with isolated thunderstorms with small hail possible Thursday and Friday morning.

A few light scattered showers are still possible on Friday morning as the upper low begins to move to the south.
