The suspect who died at the scene has been identified as Jeremy Goulet. Goulet was apparently arrested in Santa Cruz on Friday and had since been released. His criminal record includes a previous sentence to three years of probation and sex-offender treatment in 2008 in Oregon, according to OregonLive.com.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- Police say that two Santa Cruz Police Officers have been shot and killed. "It's a horrible, horrible day," said Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel.
The first shooting scene at Branciforte and Water Streets when the suspect shot the two detectives was cleared up and reopened late Tuesday night. The second shooting scene where the suspect got in a shoot out with officers and was killed, is still a crime as of early Wednesday morning. _________________

The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. when the two detectives were conducting a follow up investigation in the area of Branciforte Dr. and Water St. Watch video, Sheriff Wowak explains what happened.
Multiple Law Enforcement agencies within Santa Cruz County responded immediately to the shooting.
Witnesses tell Central Coast News they heard 20 or more shots fired at the second scene.
Schools and businesses in the area were on lockdown and police told people to stay inside. Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office and Santa Clara County law enforcement as well as the city bus system, assisted in getting those kids to a safe location at the county building and courthouse on Ocean St. at around 6:30pm where parents could pick them up.
The Santa Cruz Police Department will hold a news conference at 11:30pm on Wednesday morning in front of police headquarters.
Police named Jeremy Goulet as the suspect.
