COAST GUARD: Search for Missing Boaters is Suspended, May Have Been a Hoax

Posted: Updated:

CALIFORNIA- The U.S. Coast Guard has called off its search for a man, woman and two children who reportedly abandoned ship off the coast of Monterey County on Sunday afternoon and said the report may have been a hoax.

"We respond first to possible distress, and then we deal with everything else later. Does the possibility of a hoax exist? Of course, but as of the time that was not our concern - our concern was there's possibly four lives in peril and we need to go rescue them," said Petty Officer Barry Bena.

Rescue crews have not been able to find any debris and have had no luck in even identifying the boat or the people on it.

The Coast Guard received the distress call around 4:30 Sunday afternoon, but they lost radio contact an hour later. Part of the distress call was released, in hopes that someone would identify the family on the boat. Click here to hear the call.
