CARMEL, Calif. -- A husband and wife dead tonight after rescue efforts to save them failed, following their scuba diving excursion off the Carmel coast.
A very sad story especially since Central Coast News was told their children are now coping with the loss of both parents.
It happened at a very popular diving destination on Friday afternoon at Whalers Cove at Point Lobos State Park near Carmel.
"It's well known worldwide," said Capt. Carlos Aguilera with Cal Fire. "There's lot of scuba divers that do launch from here."
Cal Fire investigators said they frequently respond to accidents every year in the area.
The scuba divers were taken to a local hospital, but couldn't be revived.
"Even though this is a very beautiful place to be at, we want to be cautious," Capt. Aguilera said. "The tides, along with the weather patterns, can change and affect the tide pattern."
Divers who tried to revive the couple told Central Coast News their daughter waited out for her parents, then saw her mother's body floating in the ocean.
Sheriff's deputies spent the afternoon combing through a car after the divers were confirmed dead.
Identification of the scuba divers have not yet been released.
