SACRAMENTO, Calif. - It looks like the Boy Scouts of America could be in for more fallout in the controversy over openly gay scouts.
There's a new proposed law that would prevent youth groups from receiving government tax exemptions if that group discriminates based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
The bill, known as the Youth Equality Act, was introduced by State Senator Ricardo Lara, who's an openly gay lawmaker in Los Angeles County.
Lara says the bill "seeks to end the unfortunate discriminatory and outdated practices by certain youth groups by revoking their tax exemption privilege, should they not comply with our non-discrimination laws."
The newest proposal comes less than a month after the Scouts announced they'd consider a proposal that would give local troop leaders control over their policy on gay scouts.
Just before the decision was to be announced, they delayed any formal decision until at least May.
Both sides of the issue have put immense pressure on the leaders to hash the issue out.
70% of all Scout troops are sponsored by religious denominations, including many that have strict policies against gays.
CBS San Francisco reports just on Tuesday, the nation's largest Protestant group asked the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America to uphold their ban on gays.
