SALINAS, Calif- An armed robbery Friday afternoon put Steinbeck Elementary School in Salinas on lock down for nearly 30 minutes as police searched for the suspect.
Police said two 12-year old students were playing basketball on the school courts at 1714 Burlington Ave. when they were approached by a 14-year old boy on a bike. The suspect was armed with a semi-auto pistol and demanded the victim's cell phones. Both victims turned over their iPhones and the suspect fled. There is some belief that the gun used was a replica bb-gun, but at this point, police said, the case is being investigated with the presumption that the firearm was real.
The victims reported the armed suspect on campus to school staff. There was an after-school program being held in the cafeteria and multi-purpose room and the school was immediately locked down with about 100 students inside. The lock down lasted about 25 minutes just before 5 p.m. officers determined that the suspect was no longer in the area.
The suspect was described as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a red design on back, black bandana with a white design and riding a black and red bike. No injuries were reported.
