Castroville, Calif. - Students at North Monterey County High School staged a walk out on Friday apparently to protest the school's handing out of pink slips to a group of teachers. The school operator confirmed the incident to Central Coast News.
One source told us that the student led walk out was peaceful. But to combat this protest, our source says the administration thought it appropriate to call police. Why the police? The source says "to usher students away and cite them for truancy when in reality they are expressing there frustrations. But some how the principal thought it was smart to call the cops on a small peaceful student led protest."
California law requires school districts to 'pink slip' teachers they may either let go or suspend in the coming school year by March of each year. The practice is as much about budgeting as it is about helping teachers find work in the coming school year. Many times the school districts find a way to manipulate their budgets to retain most or all of these 'pink slipped' teachers.
We requested a return call by the Principal, but as of posting, the Principal has not returned our call.
