Nearly 1,000 People Injured From Meteorites That Hit Russia

Posted: Updated:

MOSCOW, Russia - Scientists say that a meteor, weighing an estimated 10 tons and traveling at 33,000 mph, exploded 18 to 32 miles in the air above the Ural mountains in Russia.

According to CBS, the blast was so loud that it shattered windows and injured almost 1,000 people. Most of the injuries were reported by people who were cut with glass after the explosion. There have been no reports of anyone injured from space particles.

People living in the area said panic set in after the explosion and many people claimed that it was the end of the world. Scientists believe there is no connection between this meteor and the 2012 DA14 that is expected to pass by Earth, as the closest recorded asteroid about 17,150 miles.
