SALINAS, Calif.--On February, 14th, Salinas Police responded to two reports regarding suspicous telephone calls made to local residents. The callers identifed themselves as representatives of PG&E and Direct T.V. and told residents that their service would be terminated unless they obtained a money order for payment and sent it to an address that the caller provided.
The phone numbers being called from were out of the Florida area and untraceable. At this point, we are considering these calls to be a scam and we are alerting residents to be cautious in responding to such calls. Fortunately, neither of the two reporting parties were vicitmized but there will no doubt be more calls being made to local people.
We urge anyone that takes a call of a similar nature to be diligent in calling the company being represented to determine the validity and report any fraudulant calls received.
