BIG BEAR, Calif. -- A cabin in Big Bear has burned to the ground after officers chased ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner into the building Tuesday afternoon. Gunfire was exchanged for several minutes between police and Dorner. Two officers were shot, one died from his injuries. Police said the second officer is in surgery and is expected to be okay.

Officers got the call about a possible sighting of Christopher Dorner in Big Bear. A victim called in and said a man who matched the description of Dorner stole his white truck around noon. Police dispatched several officers to the area and sent out helicopters. A short chase began through the mountains then police said the suspect, presumed to be Christopher Dorner crashed the car and fled on foot to a nearby cabin.

Police said Dorner barricaded himself in the building. Officers said the cabin was being rented out and do not believe anyone else was inside except for Dorner. Investigators said they began to throw tear gas into the building, a few moments later they heard a single gunshot sound come from the cabin. Investigators said a few minutes after that they heard sounds of ammunition exploding.

Firefighters began to arrive on scene as the fire burned. Officials are still waiting to make sure the scene is safe for crews to fight the fire. Police said the building has been completely destroyed and it is unlikely that anyone inside the structure could have escaped because the cabin was completely surrounded by law enforcement.

Law enforcement does not want to release a lot of information about this ongoing investigation. Police said they are bringing in light and will be out all night combing the scene for clues to complete their investigation.
