Maker's Mark Adding More Water to their Whiskey

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - If you're a fan of Maker's Mark bourbon, you may want to make your next drink a double.

The bourbon producer is planning to cut the alcohol by volume in its formula by three percent -- by watering it down.

The company says global demand for their whiskey now exceeds their ability to make it.

Maker's Mark is reassuring their consumers, though, the taste won't change.

The Associated Press says the alcohol volume will go from 45%, to 42%, or from 90 proof to 84 proof.

To put some perspective to it, even if you put even the littlest bit of water into each barrel, the number of barrels produced by Maker's Mark must be outrageous.  So that little bit of water eventually adds up.

In fact, Rob Samuels, the chief operating officer of Maker's Mark, says the change will increase volume by about 6%.

There is no change to the way the whiskey is made, other than increasing the amount of water added.

The change - is permanent.
