Republicans Want Fire Tax Refund

Posted: Updated:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- More than two dozen Republican lawmakers sent Governor Brown a letter asking him to repeal a fire fee for some California taxpayers.

The group is questioning how Cal Fire is using those taxpayer dollars. In recent news reports, Cal Fire already admitted to placing $3.6 million dollars in a non-profit account from Cal Fire settlements.

In the letter, lawmakers reminded the Governor that the special fire tax should pay for fire prevention in certain remote California areas. The Governor's budget also called for some of the money to be used for administrational costs for the department.

As for the hidden funds account, the department is accused of using $33,000 from the money on a Pismo Beach conference trip, $600,000 on 26 evidence sheds and 600 digital cameras.

Senate Republican leader Bob Huff would like the Department of Justice to audit the department.
