Vandals Slash 90 Cars' Tires In Soquel

Posted: Updated:

SOQUEL, Calif. -- Santa Cruz County Sheriff's deputies said vandals slashed the tires of 90 cars early Sunday morning in Soquel.

The vandals hit multiple streets in Soquel off of Soquel Drive, including Orchard Street, Victory Lane, and Pepperwood Way. On Monday, car owners were stuck dealing with the mess.

One of those victims is Patty Adams. She said she woke up on Sunday morning to get ready for Superbowl festivities, when deputies knocked on her home, saying her tires had been slashed. Vandals also hit her daughter's car.

"I just felt violated, and awful, like what else can happen to me? I've already got my husband disabled and now my cars are down," she said.

Adams has been taking care of her husband, who became disabled a few years ago after an operation. Since then, she's had to take over at home. Her husband can't see, talk, or walk.

"Nobody will ever understand what it's like to have your loved one ripped out of your life," she said.

Today her car got towed to a repair shop, and she has to pay up. Adams isn't alone. The same thing happened to dozens of her neighbors.

"I'm looking out on the street and I'm seeing a bunch of people outside looking like there was just an earthquake," she said.

A lesson learned for Adams, who said this is just one more thing she now has to worry about.

"Do I need to pull my car back in now, all the way to the back of my house?" she said.

Investigators said the vandalism could be connected to two other incidents on Sunday, where someone reportedly threw wood and branches onto Highway 1 from Orchard Street, and rocks at windshields.

If you have any information on the incidents, contact the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department or the California Highway Patrol.
