SALINAS, Calif. -- The copper colored coin in Canada is no more. That's right, the penny. Monday, Canada dropped the change and some experts say the US should follow suit.
"Everywhere! In my pants, in my car, anywhere. I always have pennies on me," said Esmeralda Magana, store manager at Magana's Meat Market in Salinas.
Megana said customers counting every penny is just fine with her too.
"Its money, I don't mind, as long as they have enough to pay they can pay whatever they want," said Magana.
Magana said the thought of dumping the penny seems too extreme because that would eventually mean having to increase some of the store's deals.
"Prices should go up, because there wouldn't be any pennies so we can just go up to the next dollar. I'm thinking, but I don't think the customer would be very happy," said Magana.
According to CNN Money the main argument against the penny is that it wastes so much time by producing something that people find little value in. But stores in Salinas said if there was no penny, businesses either lose money by lowering prices, or lose customers by raising them.
"People are counting their pennies every single day, every single transaction actually," said Magana.
