MONTEREY, Calif. - Monterey Police responded to a shooting of a 19-year-old teenager shot near Beach and Tide Street in the Del Monte Beach neighborhood Thursday night.
"Well I'm very surprised, I'm shocked that there was a shooting, not shocked that there was trouble."
That's what Robert Lind, who's lived in the Del Monte Beach neighborhood since the 70s, told me when I first broke the news of a 19-year-old shot just down the street from his home.
Lind said the beach has become a popular spot for surfers and people wanting to enjoy the bay.
Neighbors said its not uncommon to see people walking the boardwalk or having fires down on the beach on a Friday or Saturday night, but a shooting like this during the week is what has them scratching their heads.
Monterey Police officer, Leslie Sonne said the victim has gang ties in Salinas but it's not uncommon for crimes like this to spread to other cities.
"Not necessarily, some are interpersonal between people that know each other that just happen to be in Monterey, this is the first one that I can't think of since 2011 that involved people from a different area," said Sonne.
That shooting happened at Mucky Ducky Bar and Grill on Alvarado Street and led to some serious crackdowns for not only them but other bars in Monterey.
And Lind said the neighborhood isn't going to wait around.
"We want to share our neighborhood but we also want to find ways to be safe so we are going to balance that out," explained Lind.
