Activists Want Pot Legal by 2016

Posted: Updated:

In November's election, Washington and Colorado beat California to the punch when it comes to legalizing marijuana.

Supporters in the Golden State plan to wait until 2016.

"We really need time to draft an initiative that makes sense for a state like California," said Amanda Reiman with the Drug Policy Alliance.

Valerie Corral is known as somewhat of a legend in the fight to legalize medical marijuana. Her work with WAMM, the Wo/men's Alliance for Medical M arijuana, was part of the first DEA farm raids decades ago.

She agrees with the three year wait.

"I think the year 2014 was premature for sure. The reason I say that is because, in an off [non-presidential election] year, people don't have a tendency to go out and vote," said Corral.

Opponents told Central Coast News there is not enough evidence to prove pot is safe enough to legalize. But Corral believes there will be enough science and knowledge by 2016 to drive the proposition.
