HOLLISTER, Calif. -- The FBI has released the picture of 27-year old Jason Keith Smith of Lincoln Park, Michigan in connection with reported bomb threats that were made at San Benito High School.
Smith was arrested on January 22nd and charged with the use of interstate communications to make threats.
Hollister police said they contacted the FBI when they discovered the suspect was possibly out of state. Investigators said Smith allegedly used a cell phone to make the bomb threats. They said he claimed to have hidden explosives in the high school and also threatened to detonate the device.
Officers said during their initial investigation with the FBI, they found Smith used social media to talk to students at the school. Police said this social media relationship is what allegedly led Smith to make the bomb threats.
San Benito High School staff and detectives have been working with FBI agents and the San Benito District Attorney's Office on the investigation.
Smith made his first appearance in court on Thursday in the U.S. District Court of Michigan. Police said he is expected to be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for Northern California.
