Senate's Feinstein Introduces Legislation to Ban Assault Weapons

Posted: Updated:

Washington, D.C.- Senator Dianne Feinstein on Thursday joined a broad coalition representing Congress, law enforcement, doctors, clergy and gun violence victims to announce the introduction of the "Assault Weapons Ban of 2013."

Here's a list of what the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 covers:

  • Prohibits the sale, manufacture, transfer and importation of 157 of the most commonly-owned military-style assault weapons;
  • Bans an additional group of assault weapons that can accept a detachable ammunition magazine and have one or more military characteristics; and
  • Bans large-capacity magazines and other ammunition feeding devices that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

In a Capital Hill press conference, Feinstein said, "There is one great hope out there, and that is you. Because you are stronger than the gun lobby. You are stronger than the gun manufacturers. But only if you stand up, if America rises up, if people care enough to call every member of the House and every member of the Senate and say we have had enough. These weapons do not belong on the streets of our towns, our cities, in our schools, in our malls, in our workplaces, in our movie theaters. Enough is enough."

The gun lobby and several GOP House members have been very vocal in their opposition to the Presidents agenda on gun control.
