SEASIDE, Calif. -- United Health HEROES grants were given to 10 different organizations in Northern California. One of them was $1,000 given to the Boys and Girls Club of Monterey. The grants are used to encourage kids to address the issue of child obesity.
United Health said the Boys and Girls Club plans to use the money to sponsor three events to combat childhood obesity. The first one is Family Fitness Night, The Hiking Tour and the Walk and Run Marathon.
Officials said students will come up with creative exercises for the events and come up with health presentations about fitness.
Other groups who received grants were Grenada Elementary School's SAFE After school Program in Grenada, the Scott Valley Unified School District in Fort Jones, Teens4Teens in Fremont, Independence High School in Placerville, Exodus Recreation Center in San Jose, Florin High School in Sacramento, SJB Child Development Centers in San Jose, Jakara Movement in Fresno and the Ravenswood School District in East Palo Alto.
