Monterey Police: Man Arrested For Showing Girls Porn, Giving Them Alcohol

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif. -- Monterey Police said a Central Coast man gained access to a school to show young girls pornographic images and even provided them with alcohol.

Monterey Police said Juan Pablo Mata, a food service employee, had direct contact with at least two girls at Santa Catalina School.

Officers accuse Mata of exchanging inappropriate things with minors at a private all-girls school and was able to pull it off by working for a food company the school hired.

Police said Mata of Seaside talked to two 14-year-old girls, selling them alcohol, and exchanging pornographic material.

"We're not going to go into detail of the content or how it was done," said Lt. Leslie Sonne of the Monterey Police Department. "One point to make clear is there was no physical contact, so the charges that talk about sexual contact had to do with exchange of obscene material."

Officials of the private school wouldn't let Central Coast News onto the property.

John Murphy, Head of Upper School for Santa Catalina, said he is always concerned for students' well being and safety, and the alleged criminal acts were disturbing to learn.

Police said Mata worked for Bon Appétit Management Company, a contract food service company based in the Bay Area.

Central Coast News tried reaching the food company, but didn't hear back as of Tuesday night.

Investigators said Mata worked for the company for several years, but weren't sure how much of that time was spent at the school.

"I don't know what role he played in that, but obviously when you're involved in the food service to the students you're going to have contact, so at some point in that there was contact between this adult and the students," Lt. Sonne said.

Police believe the relationship with the girls may have started in November of last year.

Investigators are looking to see if there are any other victims, but at this point they haven't found any.

Mata was booked into the Monterey County Jail with a bail of $250,000.

According to police, he was deported previously on a different crime and placed on an immigration hold.
