SALINAS, Calif. - Salinas Police have arrested a man after he wrecked his SUV while allegedly driving under the influence Monday afternoon.

29-year-old Gary Wheelus Jr. was driving his Jeep Grand Cherokee on Stockton Street, near East Rossi, when he lost control and struck a fire hydrant, light pole and residential fence.

The damaged fire hydrant caused a 40 foot geyser of water that was eventually repaired.

Wheelus was not injured but determined to be DUI with a blood/alcohol level 5 times the legal limit. He was booked into County Jail for DUI. No other vehicles were invovled.

Central Coast News has also confirmed Gary's relative was killed in September of 2012, following a high speed motorcycle accident in North Salinas.  Salinas Police say 29-year-old Jason Wheelus was driving under the influence when he hit the back of a parked pick-up truck on Van Buren Avenue on September 18th.  He died at Natividad Medical Center.

Jason Wheelus' girlfriend was on the motorcylce that night, but survived.
