The SPCA Telethon is this upcoming weekend! The SPCA not only provides shelter to animals, volunteers also provide pet food for people who participate in Meals on Wheels.

"Having a dog or cat in your home has so many benefits. To be able to keeps those pets in the homes, with the people, where they belong, is a big part of our mission," said SPCA spokeswoman Beth Brookhouser.

Just ask Bernie Jo.

His mom, Esther Merrell, calls the 12-year-old dog her lifeline.

When he was a puppy, Esther found out she was going blind.

"I started working with him to be my guide dog because I was losing my vision like that *snap*," said Esther.

When she lost her sight, Esther's doctor suggested Meals on Wheels. The group brings hot meals to her doorstep.

That qualified her for "Pets" Meals on Wheels.

Once a week, the SPCA delivers dog and cat food to her home, restoring the sense of independence she once had.

"Unless I'm going somewhere with somebody, one of my friends, to do something fun for both of us, it's awkward to ask people: 'I need to go to Petco and get dog and cat food," said Esther.

When Bernie Jo was a puppy, Esther's vet told her he wouldn't live past nine-years-old since he's a big dog.

But, at 12 years old, Bernie's still kickin'.

"They say Bernie Joe is a testimony to good care and a good home that's why he's lived so long," said Esther.

Esther has since gotten her sight back since losing it.

And she credits Pet Meals on Wheels for all the extra help, caring for her best friend.

The SPCA telethon is Saturday January 26th 6pm-10pm.
