SEASIDE, Calif. -- It's far from the finish line. The Monterey Downs Project, slated to be built on the former Fort Ord, could be one of the biggest job creators to race through.

The horse race track, along with a hotel, homes and other shops, will be developed on 500 acres.

Construction alone is said to bring more than 500 jobs to the area.

Project organizers hope to have finalized plans in front of the Seaside City Council for approval by the end of this year.
