A City Takes Back Its Control Over Graffiti Problem

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif.- The city of Salinas is going to take over the clean up of graffiti, rather than a citizen's committee that has been doing the work over the past few years.

Some committee members, as well as several businesses, said they are upset because they feel the change isn't needed. They said when the city was in charge of cleaning up graffiti in the past, it didn't do a good job.

Salinas city councilman Steve McShane said there are major changes in how graffiti is being managed in Salinas as the City has re-assumed responsibility for abatement from Republic Services.

The Salinas Graffiti Task Force announced its quarterly meeting will take place on Monday. Jan. 28th from 5:00 – 6:00PM at Salinas City Hall Rotunda – 200 Lincoln Ave, Salinas CA 93901.

The meeting is open to the public and will focus on recent efforts to manage and address graffiti in Salinas.

A news release said the meeting will dedicate special attention to a major change in local graffiti abatement as the City of Salinas has now assumed responsibility for managing graffiti from Republic Services. Addition discussion will center around the spending of a $500 grant that the Task Force received to help with public education and organizing around graffiti.

The mission of the Salinas Graffiti Task Force (SGTF) is to “network business, residents, community groups and government in an effort to manage graffiti in the City of Salinas.” said a news release from McShane Thursday night.

The Task Force was established in Winter of 2010 as a result of a huge spike in graffiti in the City of Salinas.

Annually, more than $100,000 is spent on graffiti abatement.
