SALINAS, Calif. - The City of Salinas is hosting the Western Regional National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) competition at the Municipal Airport through January 20th.

The rigorous competition tests the pilots' aviation skills in several events including landings, navigation, aircraft inspection, aircraft identification, and the ever famous message drop.
This will mark the third time Salinas has hosted this four day event. Eight schools have entered the competition including the host college San Jose State College.

Other notable entries competing include the Air Force Academy, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Mount San Antonio Junior College. Each of the schools will be competing for a place in the National Finals event which is held in May 2013 in Ohio.

"It is exciting for the City of Salinas to be hosting this Western Regional competition that showcases our young pilots of the future" stated Mayor Joe Gunter.
