Humane Society of the U.S. Names California #1 for Protecting Animals

Posted: Updated:

CALIFORNIA -- The Humane Society of the United States released its annual ranking for Animal Protection Laws by State. California was ranked #1, followed by Illinois and Massachusetts.

The Humane Society said this is the fourth year in a row the state has been ranked #1. The organization does an annual analysis of animal protection laws in all 50 states. HSUS ranks the states based on the animal protection laws the state has in place including policies that deal with animal cruelty and fighting. The Humane Society said California stayed in first place because the state passed a number of new laws for animals. They said some of those new laws included a law banning hunting bears and bobcats.

Officials said Ohio was the most improved state, and South Dakota was in last place.
