What Is An Assault Weapon?

Posted: Updated:

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. -- The Chinese-made SKS, the Bushmaster SR15, and the Hungarian AK47. All weapons Pacific Grove Police have confiscated and all assault rifles.

"An assault weapon is enumerated on the California Penal Code, certain types of weapons based on manufacture and model number as well as certain characteristics of weapons are deemed to be assault rifles," said Commander John Miller, Pacific Grove Police.

Commander Miller showed Central Coast News what defined those guns as assault weapons. He said when it comes down to it a combination of characteristics puts the gun into the classification.

Some of the many characteristics that make a rifle an assault weapon would be the pistol grip, detachable magazine and flash suppressor. But those are just a few. The California Penal Code 30510 and 30515 lists many more characteristics that make a gun an assault weapon.

On Monday, President Barack Obama said he will announce the recommendations he receives on stricter gun laws. One may be to reinstate the assault weapon ban.
