Inmate Commits Apparent Suicide in Santa Cruz County Jail

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - According to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff, one man committed suicide will serving time in the Main Jail in Santa Cruz County. Paramedics pronounced the male inmate, 41, dead in his cell just before noon Sunday.

According to the sheriff's office, the inmate was arrested Friday on felony threat charges and was booked into the facility late Friday night. He was placed into a single cell because of his high risk to get along with other inmates.

Sunday morning, the inmate received breakfast and medication and appeared fine during a routine morning check around 10 o'clock. During a similar routine check just an hour later, the inmate was found unconscious and unresponsive from an apparent suicide by hanging. An officer administered medical assistance before medical staff, firefighters and paramedics made it to the scene.

He was pronounced dead just minutes later. His identity is being withheld until the next of kin has been notified. An investigation is ongoing and the county coroner is investigating the cause of death.
