MONTEREY, Calif.- An update on the local sea otter we have all fallen in love with, Olive. Researchers began tracking her journey in the Monterey Bay because she's the first sea otter in California who had been oiled, washed, rehabilitated and released, then gave birth to a pup.
Researchers have been checking up on Olive once a week and announced Friday the otter's baby is a girl. Monterey Bay Aquarium sea otter experts Michelle Staedler and Jessica Fujii got a good look at Olive's pup this week and confirmed it is female.
Olive and her pup have been spending a lot of time foraging in the kelp beds off Aptos and Capitola this week, eating lots of crabs and octopi. The pup can dive for over a minute and is capable of catching her own food now, though she still nurses.
Olive will be tracked her entire life.
